In the heart of the Los Lagos Region lies Futaleufú, a Patagonian paradise that combines adventure, nature, and a commitment to sustainability. This small town, home to about 2,600 inhabitants, is world-renowned for its imposing namesake river—ideal for rafting and kayaking—and for a vision of sustainable development that has earned international recognition.

A Destination Recognized for its Sustainability

In 2021, Futaleufú was selected as one of the 100 most sustainable destinations in the world by the NGO Green Destinations. It also won first place in the Earth Award at the ITB Tourism Fair in Berlin and placed third in the Green Destinations People’s Choice Award, supported by the international public.

These recognitions reflect the community’s long-term commitment to protecting its natural environment. Since 2014 Futaleufú has been a pioneer in eliminating disposable plastic bags, and in 2016 it established a household waste treatment and composting center. These initiatives have inspired other municipalities in Chile and show how tourism can develop in harmony with nature.

History and Tradition

Futaleufú—Mapudungun fütra “big” and lewfu “river,” meaning “Big River”—has roots dating to 1912 when the first Chilean settlers, such as the family of Ceferino Moraga, arrived from Chiloé. The municipality was officially founded on April 9, 1929, and its evolution from an isolated settlement to a vibrant tourist destination reflects the effort and resilience of its inhabitants.

Local culture preserves gaucho and huaso traditions. Sectors like Espolón and El Azul are ideal for connecting with this heritage—enjoying mate, horseback riding, and the warm hospitality of the community.
