Temuco, the capital of the Araucanía Region, stands out as a cultural epicenter in southern Chile. Founded in 1881, the city reflects a blend of cultures in which Mapuche heritage intersects with European influences, notably German and French. Below are some of the main attractions to include on your visit.

Cerro Ñielol Natural Monument

A green oasis in the center of the city, Cerro Ñielol is ideal for walking, observing native flora and fauna, and enjoying panoramic views of Temuco.

Araucanía Regional Museum

A journey through the region’s history and culture, with exhibits that include Mapuche cosmovision and displays related to European colonization.

Plaza de Armas

The city’s heart, surrounded by notable historic buildings such as the Cathedral and the Post Office. It’s a pleasant place to stroll, have a coffee and soak in Temuco’s lively atmosphere.

Pablo Neruda Railway Museum

A tribute to the Chilean poet and Nobel laureate, this museum houses a collection of locomotives and carriages that tell the story of the railroad in the region.

Lake Villarrica

Villarrica National Park

Located in the provinces of Cautín (Araucanía) and Valdivia (Los Ríos), about 12 km southwest of Pucón. The park conserves diverse fauna and flora and offers skiing, hiking and camping. The distance from Temuco to Villarrica National Park is about 112 km.

Conguillío National Park

Situated in Araucanía, the park is noted for Llaima volcano, volcanic lakes and ancient forests. It is described as 148 km northeast of Temuco. From Temuco it is about 109 km to the park.

Malalcahuello National Reserve

Located in the Araucanía Region within the municipalities of Lonquimay and Curacautín and near the Aldea Centinela Commercial Sites project. The reserve protects diverse fauna and flora and offers hiking; Malalcahuello National Reserve is located 127 km from Temuco.

Corralco Ski Resort

Located in the Malalcahuello-Nalcas National Reserve on the southeastern slope of the Lonquimay volcano at 1,450 meters above sea level. About 120 km from Temuco and 37 km from Curacautín, Corralco offers more than 1,775 hectares of skiable terrain, 32 slopes and 8 lifts, with lessons and equipment available for all levels.

Pucón

Located in Cautín province, around 100 km southeast of Temuco, Pucón is known as Chile’s “Adventure Tourism Capital” and offers activities from hiking and skiing to rafting and mountaineering.

Tips for your trip

The best time to visit Temuco is between spring and autumn, when weather tends to be milder with less rainfall. Accommodation options range from hotels and hostels to cabins and campsites. To get around the city, consider public transport, taxis or bicycles. Be sure to try local dishes such as curanto, asado de cordero and mote con huesillos, and learn a few basic words in Mapudungun, the language of the Mapuche people.
